AP Summer Reading Assignment

Summer 2009 Reading Assignment: All Pre-AP/AP/DC Students


Objectives:

  • The stduent will read with comprehension for a sustained period of time.
  • The student will express and suppport response to a text.
  • The student will use elements of text to defend his/her own responses and interpretations.

Assignment:

  • Read ONE or MORE books from the list attached. These books OR authors have appeared on the AP list one or more times since 2003.
  • Keep a reading log as you read. Write at least TEN entries per log.
  • Each entry should be a least 3 sentences long and use specific details from the book. The entries should be spaced evenly throughout the book; the last entry should be about the end of the the book.
  • Each entry should have a small sketch that illustrates that day's reading in the memory clue section.
  • Grading: Each entry on the reading log is worth 3 points. The total points are then multiplied by 3. The grade is based on total points out of 30.
    • 0=no entry
    • 1=1 sentence
    • 2=2 sentences with good details
    • 3=3 sentences, excellent details, and sketch

Reading Log Assignment: Logs are due the first day of classes. Bring the book you read and the reading logs with you to class on the first day of school.

Grades:

  • 1 book + 1 reading log with 10 entries = 90
  • 2 books + 2 reading logs (10 entries each) = 100

Note: The first week of school you will write a 2-3 page essay about your summer reading book. Please bring the book and reading logs with you on the first day of school.
